News Stories

These are the three stories covered in the episode, with direct links to our full article breakdowns and the original sources.

Story 1Featured in the episode

Japanese Naturalization 10-Year Rule

Japan's Ministry of Justice (法務省) has decided that foreign nationals seeking Japanese citizenship will need more than 10 years of residence in Japan, starting in April. The change is framed as 原則として (as a general rule), suggesting there may still be special cases. Key terms include 帰化 (naturalization), 外国人 (foreign national), 日本国籍 (Japanese citizenship), 要件 (requirements), and 在留 (residence).

Story 2Featured in the episode

Gasoline Subsidy Reserve Fund

The Japanese government plans to use nearly all of its remaining reserve fund — around 810 billion yen — to support subsidies meant to keep gasoline prices from rising too sharply. Key vocabulary includes 予備費 (reserve fund), 補助金 (subsidy), 財源 (funding source), and 枯渇 (depletion). A formal Cabinet decision (閣議決定) could come very soon, signaling real urgency as oil prices stay high.

Story 3Featured in the episode

Sakana AI Namazu Model

Sakana AI announced a new AI model series called Namazu alongside a chat service called Sakana Chat with real-time web search. The company took existing foundation models with publicly available weights and applied its own post-training methods, aiming to improve neutrality and factual accuracy while maintaining performance in reasoning, general knowledge, and coding.
